The Northern 5K road championships attracted a high quality field of 492 runners at Wythenshawe Park in Manchester. The race was won by Gareth Raven, a sub 2:20 marathon runner, in 14 minutes and 47 seconds. Todmorden’s Paul Brannigan and Salford’s Derek Crewe battled it out for the Northern Vet 50 crown. At the British 5K championships Brannigan had prevailed, but here it was Crewe who was the victor in 16 minutes and 54 seconds.
