Jim Smith 5K Trail

Jim Smith Brownhouse Reservoir 5k Trail, 13 September 2016
Report by Rob Tyson

Andems Runners, assisted by Rochdale Harriers & GALs hosted the Jim Smith Brownhouse Reservoir 5k Trail on Tuesday 13th. At 6.30pm an army of Tod Harriers gathered to show their appreciation and respect for one of their members. Jim Smith, a legend in the Fell Running community was being honoured in this 5k race. Jim also participated in the race, much to the delight and support of all the Harriers collected. The race has a hilly road start followed by stony trail, finishing with two laps of Brownhouse Wham Reservoir. The conditions on the night were apocalyptic: thunder and lightning, with extremely heavy rain, making for testing conditions. 40+ Harriers competed, with Andrew Worster showing good form winning the race in 16:58, followed closely by Nick Barber (17:08) and then Richard Butterwick (18:13), to complete the winning male team. First Tod female was Jane Mitchell in a time of 21:20.

All runners came back safe and sound, though a few were a lot wetter and colder than others! Afterwards, Jim was awarded with a commemorative shield, with the inscription ‘Services to Athletics’. Jim has had a long and worthwhile involvement within the running community and was Secretary to the Fell Running Association. Todmorden Harriers are proud to have him still as a member of their club.
